  3. for soprano and orchestra 1960. Born in
  4. Germany, he studied in Europe before settling
  5. in the USA in 1937. A student of Hindemith,
  6. his vocal music is composed in Neo-Classical
  7. style; in the mid-1950s he began increasingly
  8. to employ improvisation. Foss has also
  9. written chamber and orchestral music in which
  10. the players reproduce tape-recorded effects.
